Lingerie FAQs and Descriptions
Babydoll - a short nightgown or negligee intended as intimate nightwear.
Babydoll lingerie is often trimmed with lace, ruffles, appliques, Marabou fur, bows and ribbons, sometimes with spaghetti straps.
Often sheer or translucent fabric like nylon, chiffon or silk. The hemline is usually about six inches above the knee
like a Minidress and may have a scoopneck and often packaged with a matching thong or panty. A provocative, yet comfortable gift for the ladies!
Back Seams - referring to the seam that runs up the back of some stockings. A very classic
and sexy look that helps accent the curves of the legs.
Boa - a long scarf made of feathers used in the art of burlesque dancing
Bodice - the part of a dress or lingerie item which covers the breasts.
Bodystocking - a snug fitting one piece hosiery item that covers the body and legs. Can be worn
as hosiery or a very sexy one piece to drive him wild!
Bodysuit - a leotard type garment worn as lingerie or clubwear
Boning - Rigid supports sewn vertically into a bustier or corset that help to maintain a slim,
shapely look. Originally made from bone in early years but now usually made of plastic.
Boy Shorts - a panty style similar in design to boy's underwear but very sexy!
Bralette - a top that looks like a bra but usually without the support
Brocade - a rich fabric, originally silk, Brocade is characterized by a compact
warp-effect background with one or more fillings used in the construction to make the motif or figure. The filling threads, often of gold or silver in the
original fabrics of this name, float in embossed or embroidered effects in the figures.
Burnout - a pattern alternating in sheer fabric
Bustier - a form-fitting, classy, seductive type of lingerie that can either be worn as
lingerie or as an outer garment (popular as clubwear). Bustiers slim the wearer's waist, while enhancing the bust. Bustiers often have detachable garter
straps for holding up stockings and often come with a matching panty or g-string. The ultimate lingerie to show off your curves!
Camisole or Cami Top - a short negligee or top without support. Can be worn as sleepwear and sometimes clubwear
Charmeuse - a fine semilustrous crepe in satin weave
Chemise - a beautifully fitted bustline with a relaxed gown, hemmed below the hip,
but above the knee; often held up by thin spaghetti straps. A chemise is generally longer than a babydoll, but shorter than a dress. Sometimes worn
as clubwear but often the perfect way to tease your man!
Chiffon - a light and sensuous sheer fabric
Choker - a snug fitting necklace or collar usually made of leather or vinyl. A great
accessory to that sexy dress or fantasy outfit.
Chopper Bar Lace - an embroidered shiny pattern over lace
Corset - a glamorous and fashionable piece of lingerie used to slim the body and
make it conform to a fashionable silhouette. Heavily emphasises and enhances a curvy figure, by reducing the waist, and thereby exaggerating the bust
and hips. Often packaged with a matching panty or thong. Don't forget to add the sexy stockings to drive him wild!
Crochet - large knit pattern resembling crochet - comfortable and sexy!
Crop Top - or cropped top is a blouse or top cut off at the bottom to expose the midriff
Crotchless - lingerie or panty with a convenient opening at the crotch area
Cuban Foot - pantyhose or stockings with a contrasting heel or sole - very sexy!
Demi Cups - also known as half cups. A lower cut line to reveal more of the upper breasts
Denier - i.e. 15 Denier - A unit of fineness for rayon, nylon, and silk fibers,
based on a standard mass per length
Eyelash Lace - lace lingerie in which the edges resemble eyelashes
Eyelets - small metal rings used to help fasten and sometimes decorative
Fence Net - very large fishnet type openings in hosiery and stockings, very provocative!
Fishnet - open mesh stockings, hosiery or lingerie and oh so tantalizing!
Garter - originally garters were used to hold up stockings but now used as a bridal accessory or
just to add that sexy special touch.
Garter Belt - worn around the waist with straps, called garters, that clasp
onto stockings to keep them from falling down. Usually the back is adjustable to fit different waist sizes and the garter straps can be adjusted
for length. The perfect accessory for that sexy bra and panty set and easy to mix and match colors.
Gartini - a panty with built in garter straps for your stockings
G-String - a panty with a fully exposed buttocks (just a string or thin strand in the back) - often
comes with babydolls, chemises, etc.
Halter Top - usually a short midriff type top or cami held up by a neck strap
Jacquard - named after the Frenchman who invented it. It is a beautifully woven intricate
pattern or weave; very beautiful!
Keyhole - an oval shaped opening often to expose the breasts
Lurex - a trademark fabric with metallic threading
Lycra - a trademark brand of spandex and very elastic
Marabou - a soft, feather-like material used to accent garments and lingerie
Microfiber - a fine synthetic fiber woven into lightweight, washable and breathable fabrics that hold
shape extremely well
Miniskirt or Mini Dress - a style of skirt or dress which can be seen in multiple lengths form the micro-mini which stops just
below the buttocks, to lengths around the middle thigh.
Opaque - a garment or fabric which is not transparent or translucent
Open Bust or Tip - aka "Boob Out" or "Peek-a-Boo" - a lingerie item with openings to
reveal sometimes a little or all of the breasts - very sexy!
Overlay - one type of fabric usually layered over another
Padded Cups - added padding in bustiers, bras, etc. to help enhance the breasts - sometimes
the pads are removeable
Panty - a generic term for a women's underwear
Pantyhose - usually Nylon fabric that stretches to fit and covers legs from hip to toe, or with open foot
Patent Leather - an imitation or synthetic leather that is smooth and shiny
Peek-a-Boo aka "Open Bust/Tip" - a lingerie item with openings to
reveal sometimes a little or all of the breasts - very sexy!
Peignoir - a negligee or long robe for women usually sheer
Petticoat - an underskirt usually a little shorter than outer clothing and often made with
a ruffled, pleated, or lace edge
Polka Dot - fabric with classis, usually very small, evenly spaced dots - a sexy retro look!
Pouch - a generic term for a man's g-string
Rhinestone - a simulated diamond used sometimes to accent the fabric
Ribbed - a fabric with ribs, usually vertically raised to help form the garment
Rivets - a flat metal fastener often used to accent the fabric (usually vinyl or leather)
Satin - a shiny woven fabric made from silk or rayon with a smooth, glossy finish
Scalloped Edge - the edge of a fabric that resembles the shape of scallop shells
Seamless - fabric designed without seams or lines to create smooth appearances under
outerwear and for comfort
Sequins - small shiny discs used to accent a garment
Silk - a fine, strong and luxurious fabric made by silkworms
Skirtini - a short skirt with built in garter straps
Spandex - a lightweight, highly elastic man-made fabric which is strong, durable and
non-absorbent to water and oils
Stockings - hosiery covering from over the knee or mid-thigh to the toes - often has lace
or elastic to help keep them up. If not the stay-up type garments with garters or garter belts are needed
Strapless - a woman's garment that exposes the shoulders and has no shoulder straps
Studs - a shiny cone shaped metal fastener that is flat in the back - often used as accents on leather
Suspender Style - hosiery, stockings, or bodystockings that are held up by suspender-like
fabric around the waist much like a garter belt. Usually to open the sides or back and always extremely tantalizing!
Tapestry - a heavy luxurious fabric resembling the heavy beautiful designs and weavew in rugs and upholstery
Teddiette - a teddy with attached garters to hold up the stockings - very nice!
Teddy - a snug fitting one piece lingerie item that resembles a bustier, extends down
between the legs as a thong, and ends up fastening to the back of the bodice. Teddies can resemble anything from a harness to a full fledged zippered, hooked,
and laced corset with an attached thong. Some teddies come with garter belts attached. Just add stilletos and prepare for a long night!
Thong - an underwear style for men and women with a very thin piece of fabric up the back to
reveal the entire buttocks
Tricot - this type of fabric is flat knitted with fine ribs on the face (lengthwise) and
ribs on the back (crosswise).
Underwire - a thin wire sewn into the lower section of lingerie items to help support the breasts
Venice Lace - lace with a heavy and firm profile or pattern with an open background
Waist Cincher - much like a corset but smaller - fits around the waist to decrease the waistline and accent your curves!
